When Weeds Attack: Tackling Weeds on Your New Lawn

If you’ve recently put down sod and your lawn is flourishing nicely, the last thing you want is for weeds to start growing and ruining the effect. Weeds are sadly an inevitable part of having a lawn. However, this doesn’t mean that you should necessarily take the situation lying down!

There are plenty of effective ways to eradicate these unwelcome inhabitants in your garden. Here are just a few of the best ways to manage your lawn area and keep weeds to a minimum.

Managing Your Lawn and Minimizing Weeds

1) Pull, pull, pull! One of the simplest and most effective ways to keep weeds at bay is to simply pull them up. However, be warned. If you don’t get them by the roots, all that will happen is they’ll grow again in a few weeks’ time. To pull a weed effectively, grab the stalk firmly at the base and gently ease it out. Pulling hard may cause it to snap, which will leave the roots in the ground.

2) Mowing regularly. Mowing on a regular basis can help to keep weed growth to a minimum. The aim should be to mow before the weeds have had a chance to become established, as this will help to reduce spread across the lawn. However, take care not to over-mow, as thicker grass will help limit weed growth.

3) Cover up. Most plants require sunlight to thrive and weeds are no exception. If you place a cover over the top, preventing sunlight from hitting them, you should be able to kill them off. Of course, you need to be careful you don’t also cover the lawn, as this may kill the grass too!
