Why Sod Your Yard Now?
- Improved varieties of sod – Floratam and Bahia are still good choices, but today we have newer varieties with better drought hardiness and less care.
- Instant curb appeal
- Reduce dirt and allergens from tracking in the house — if you have kids or animals, you know what we mean!
- Fewer weeds with varieties like Provista St. Augustine
- Replace the sod in your yard year round — we are fortunate in the Tampa Bay Area where the weather tends to stay mild year round.
- Fresh new sod will allow your family to get outside and enjoy your yard. Why go to a restaurant? Let’s grill out. Dinner on the patio!
What Sod Grows in the Full Sun or Part Shade?
All sod is grown in the field in full sun so any variety of grass will grow in full sun in your yard. With regard to shade, while no sod will survive in a great deal of shade, some will do better than others in moderate shade. To help you consider your options for your yard please refer to our shade scale.
When To Sod Your Yard
Florida is a great place to live if you’re thinking about re-sodding your lawn. Unless we’re expecting extreme temperatures or a hurricane, sod can be installed almost any time of the year. New sod will always need watering during the first four to eight weeks to ensure it will root properly. Too much water can result in disease so be sure to follow watering guidelines for your sod.
Sod Prices Will Depend On The Type of Grass You Buy
How much you’ll pay for sod will depend on the variety of grass you get. One of the biggest factors will be how much shade you have in your yard. Use our Shade Scale to help you select your sod.
Varieties Of Sod And Ground Cover
We grow and sell over 10 types of Florida grass and ground cover for your yard. Some of the things to consider when making a decision about what will work best in your yard are soil, amount of sun or shade, your commitment to watering, how much maintenance you’re willing to put in, the amount of traffic the turf must take, not to mention the look you’re going for. Take a look at the Varieties page to find the right sod solution for you or give us a call!
We also provide the option for you to pick up from a single piece of sod to a semi load directly from the farm in Wimauma. Note for installation purposes we do have a 400 square foot minimum. Also note piece sod sales are limited and subject to change based on availability.

Benefits of Choosing Sod for Your Lawn
Installing sod offers numerous advantages over other methods. Here’s why homeowners prefer sod for their lawns:
Erosion Control
Sod is an excellent solution for preventing soil erosion. Its dense root system helps hold the soil in place, making it ideal for sloped areas or regions prone to heavy rainfall.
Weed Prevention
Sod provides a thick, established lawn that leaves little room for weeds to grow. This reduces the need for herbicides and makes lawn maintenance easier.
Improved Aesthetics
A professionally installed sod lawn enhances the curb appeal of your home, making it more attractive and potentially increasing its market value.
Sod Installation Process
Our comprehensive sod installation process ensures that your new lawn looks beautiful and stays healthy for years to come. Here’s what you can expect when you choose Council Growers for your lawn sod needs:
Site Preparation
We start by thoroughly preparing the site. This includes removing any existing grass, weeds, and debris, as well as in the removal process we are tilling the soil to ensure proper aeration and drainage.
Soil Testing and Amendment
Next, we recommend and can assist in testing the soil to determine its pH and nutrient levels. Based on the results, we suggest amending the soil with the necessary nutrients to create an optimal growing environment for your new sod.
Sod Installation
Once the site is prepared, we carefully lay the sod, ensuring each piece fits perfectly and the seams are tightly joined. This helps prevent gaps and promotes faster root establishment.
Watering and Maintenance
Proper watering is crucial during the first few weeks after installation. We provide detailed watering instructions and maintenance tips to ensure your new lawn takes root successfully and remains healthy.
Maintaining Your New Sod Lawn
After installation, maintaining your sod lawn is essential to keep it looking its best. Here are some tips for ensuring your lawn remains lush and healthy:
Regular Watering
Water your sod lawn regularly, especially during the first eight weeks after installation. Deep watering encourages deep root growth, which is vital for a healthy lawn.
Mowing
Wait until your sod lawn has firmly rooted before mowing. Set your mower to the highest setting for the first few cuts to avoid stressing the new grass.
Fertilization
Apply a balanced fertilizer to your lawn according to the recommended schedule. This helps provide the nutrients your grass needs to thrive.
Weed Control
Monitor your lawn for weeds and address them promptly. Proper lawn care practices can help minimize weed growth.
