With the onset of spring, it is time to check your irrigation systems for your lawn to make sure everything is set up correctly. Proper watering of your lawn is important for making sure that your grass is healthy and green.
There are several things you need to do to prepare your irrigation system for spring. Here are some steps to follow.
- Determine the best time to water your lawn. Generally speaking, it is best for your lawn to run sprinklers in the early morning or late evening. However, your local government or water company may have rules about when you can run sprinklers for water conservation.
- Calibrate your irrigation system to make sure that you can control the amount of water to be distributed to your lawn before it turns itself off. You need to know how much water is being put out for each watering, so you can properly set the timers.
- Set the timers on your irrigation system. As a general rule, you only need to water your lawn once or twice a week, depending on the type of grass you have. Your type of grass also determines how long your sprinklers will stay on. How long it stays on also depends on the time of year. For spring your timer should be set to run the sprinkler for about 45 to 55 minutes.
- Make sure your sprinkler heads are positioned properly. Over the winter when you aren’t doing as much with your lawn, your sprinkler heads can shift or get moved. Make sure they are pointed in the right direction.
